Cox.net DNS redirection was breaking my VPN

I was trying to VPN into work this weekend, and I could not connect to any servers at the office.

The problem was that cox (my ISP) was intercepting all of the DNS requests and sending me to their stupid search page, and the office DNS server never got a chance to answer.

The solution was found at http://www.wikihow.com/Opt-out-of-DNS-Redirection

  1. That works but here is a simpler solution. Change your network connection order so that your VPN is connection is at the top of the list.

    Open My Network Places>View Network Connection or Start>Settings>Control Panel>Network and Dial-up Connections.
    On the Advanced menu, click Advanced Settings. (In Vista and Windows 7 you may need to hit your ALT key in order to see the Advanced menu option.}
    On the Adapters and Bindings tab, click the connection that is you want to be the first connection in the Connections box.
    Click the Up arrow at the right-side of the box until it is the first connection in the list, and then click OK.
